A handful or so years ago I became one of those dog moms. I really started looking into what I was giving my dog, especially on a regular or daily basis, and noticed how much the pet industry scams the hell out of dog parents (including your beloved pet).

Most dog treats on the market are absolute trash, which I speak more about here if you care to read, and their inconceivably cheap price for the quality is swipe bait. You know, instead of click bait it’s swipe bait…but with your credit card.

Anyway. I knew there had to be a better snacking option that was healthier and still inexpensive. Yes, while we tend to pay for convenience, most of your dog treats on the market take straight advantage of the fact you’re less likely to even *care* to know what ingredients you’re giving your pet (as long as you don’t have to make it). I encourage you to start considering what all actually goes into those treats you’re not feeding your dog but spending hard earned money on.

To make these treats, I went ahead and purchased these adorable silicone dog treat molds to make it a lot easier for molding and portioning. Depending on the size treats you’re interested in making, choose the appropriately sized treat mold or simply use a measuring spoon as a scooper.

*Note: Item costs can vary based on location, inflation, brand, and sale price. I do my best to buy/suggest the most cost-effective option. I also may not factor certain ingredients into the price where their amounts have an inconsiderable impact, such as salt, oil or baking powder.

Money-saving tips

  • Buy what’s on sale.
  • If you already have it in your pantry or fridge, duh, don’t buy it!
  • Only buy the amount you need to make the recipe – i.e., if the recipe only calls for 2 lemons, only buy 2 single lemons, don’t buy the bag!
  • The price difference between organic, non-organic, fresh and frozen options – organic/frozen can be the most cost effective (i.e., depending on brand/store, if it’s on sale or BOGO).

Soft, chewy and full of peanut butter flavor your dog will drool over - literally. With only a handful of simple ingredients (likely already in your pantry), you can make dog treats you can feel good about giving your beloved pooch.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F. In a blender, processor or grater, process your carrots and apple. Be sure to take out the apple core and seeds first. It's up to you whether you want to puree or shred your carrots and apple. Add contents to a medium sized bowl.
  2. Add in the coconut oil, peanut butter, flour, baking powder and water and stir until well combined. If the consistency seems too wet, add a bit more flour, or more water if it's too dry.
  3. If you are using the silicone molds (as displayed in the post), lay them out on a flat baking tray. Fill the molds without overfilling them (since they will rise some in the oven). If you aren't using molds, I advise to roll the dough into quarter sized balls and pressing them gently with your fingers to create a hockey-puck shaped biscuit (but not flattening them completely).

  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes. These treats will be subtly soft on the inside, not crunchy, but they should hold together well.
  5. Allow to cool completely before storing in an air-tight container for up to 5 days at room temperature or freeze for up to 3 months. You may also store these in the fridge if you prefer.
